I know, I know. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Feel free to be skeptical, but, as the saying goes, “don’t knock it until you’ve tried it.”
This is not a post just about Presearch, the world’s first website that rewards you with cryptographic tokens for starting your search process there instead of Google, Amazon, ESPN or any one of another 80+ providers.

It’s really a post about an easy-to-understand manifestation of the macro change we are witnessing, brought to you by the blockchain revolution.
In this revolution, the people who produce the value are the people who are rewarded for the value they create.
Prior to the arrival of blockchain systems, there was no cost-effective way to reward people for micro-contributions. Today, there is.
You can see it in action at Presearch. Every time you type in a query (the results of which take you to the same search results you see normally in Google or Bing), you are rewarded with PRE tokens.

You are going to use your PRE tokens to buy real, actual stuff, both digital goods AND physical goods, from merchants who accept your PRE tokens.
Now, you ask, why the heck would anyone accept PRE tokens from you for a t-shirt?
Aren’t they just cryptographic crap that will be worthless to them?
Is this some sort of token shell game?
Well, it would be, except for one thing. Those same tokens that the merchants accept from you are going to have value for them for another simple reason. That reason is that, as more and more people start searching at Presearch, guess what those merchants are going to want?
Yep. Your attention.
And, as Tim Wu brilliantly shared with us in his excellent book, the Attention Merchants, merchants are willing to pay for your attention.
Now it starts making sense, doesn’t it?
It’s a super clean example of crypto-economics, the goal of which is to create self-contained and growing, circular economies.
- You get paid in PRE tokens for searching
- You pay merchants with PRE for their goods and/or services.
- Merchants pay for your attention with PRE and execute campaigns
And the cycle continues (and the value of a PRE goes up because demand increases for it as more people do it).
If you think it isn’t intuitive, you should ask my 10 year old, Nadia, who has become an avid user of Presearch. Daily, she says, to me, “Dad, how many PRE do you have? I bet I have more!”
And she’s right. She does.
If you contrast this approach with the way you are searching now, there’s one fundamental difference.
When you search on Google, you are also creating value, but you are creating it for them. They take your search input query and add it to their Big Data hoard, allowing them to know even more about you, potentially manipulate you, and make money off of you.
Presearch believes that is not the way it should be.
They believe you should be rewarded for the value you create.
It’s an ambitious goal. And I’m not saying by any stretch that Presearch is going to dominate the world, now or ever.
But it will make you see one big possibility.

What I am saying is that there is blockchain-based project that
- has a live, working product
- demonstrates how crypto can be used to facilitate micro-payments in exchange for value creation
- protects your data and privacy
- gives us a familiar, comprehensible preview of how a token economy will work
